| A guy woke up in the morning with a terrible hangover. Next to the bed was a couple of aspirins, a glass of water, and a note from his wife: "Honey, there's a hot breakfast waiting for you in the kitchen. Love, your wife".
He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.
He stumbles into the bathroom and notices he has a huge black eye. After shaving, he goes to the kitchen, and sees that the hall mirror is broken too.
His son is in the kitchen and as he's eating his huge breakfast. The guy asks the son what all this is about.
Well, last night you came home drunk off your ass, stumbled into the mirror and hit your head on the doorknob. Mom helped you to bed, and as she's trying to get your pants off you kicked her away and said "get off me lady, I'm married"! | comments: 8 comments or Leave a comment |
| Better to be Sexy than Worthy. by Tadhg Kelly on 11/27/09 01:52:00 pm

The Opposite of Remarkable is Very Good - Seth Godin, Purple Cow
I've recently been doing a lot of reading about how to be successful in the age of retweets, viral successes and exploding choice, and trying to apply that to games. In so doing, I've come across an idea (first from Seth Godin, but repeated elsewhere also) that products need to be remarkable as a first step to success and if they are not remarkable then they are average. Average things are very hard to market and sell because people don't really talk about average.
In the television age, average was what worked best because television advertising was expensive but also mass-market. There were only a few channels, so products that got on TV got sales, bought more ads, more sales, and so on.
In the internet age, advertisements don't really work any more. There are so many ads vying for attention across a billion potential channels that we simply ignore them. The response from business has been to try and overcome that with many more products, but that simply compounds the problem. The result is a whole lot of average or very similar products all clawing at each other for market share.
So there's a real impetus for developers to work on the unusual rather than the usual because the unusual is frequently where the fun happens and users who become fans of fun unusual things are much more likely to spread the word. The unusual gets word of mouth recognition, which in turn magnifies through sharing and social networks into a torrent of attention and that leads to sales.
I think most developers essentially understand this (even if their bosses don't) and so it's not especially controversial reasoning. But something interesting happens when they are confronted with this idea: They assume that remarkability and quality are the same thing, that what's required of them is to compete even harder in genres, to get better graphics, better gameplay and better sound in known genres and that's what gets you talked about, and that rewards accrue to those who are worthy. Developers who think like this (which is most of you) think that it's all a matter of building a better boat.
What is worthiness? To be worthy is essentially to look for approval. It essentially assumes that there are various steady states in the industry that bestow mana from heaven onto those who have tried harder enough. In the worthy mindset, what it takes to beat a World of Warcraft is an even better World of Warcraft. To beat Oblivion? An even better first person fantasy roleplaying game. To beat FIFA, an even better football game.
In some cases worthiness does indeed win: World of Warcraft is a better game than Everquest and took its crown. Most of the time, however, worthiness loses. The problem that being worthy engenders is that the empowered class who are the ones to deliver said worthiness (such as journalists) are actually bored by seeing the same thing. There is generally only so much room for improvement in any given genre (without a dramatic shift in technology) that a kind of inertia builds up around the chosen successful competitor. That's why back in the day the leap from Quake to Counterstrike was dramatic, whereas the differentiation between first person shooters these days is largely stylistic and average.
Secondly, the perceived influencers in the hardcore gaming culture (again, journalists) are often far less influential than they appear. This is true in any medium, but increasingly more so when anyone can write a blog game preview and anyone can tweet their opinion, those voices just don't carry as much weight any more.
The problem is that the core assumption is wrong: Rewards actually accrue to those who are sexy, and sexiness and worthiness are often not the same thing.
So what is sexiness?
Sexiness is difference. Not just difference, but passionate difference. A few years ago while everyone was coming out with more of the same action adventure games, Guitar Hero showed up with a cool game idea that was sexy. Everyone likes music, everyone has a secret inner air guitarist inside. Put two and two together and boom. Sexytimes. Now, many releases and competition from Rock Band later, the whole music game genre is becoming as average and boring as everything else and there's probably very little room in which to usefully experiment. Now its all about developers obsessing on how to build an even better guitar.
I think there are 3 C's that essentially define sexiness. Important to remember in all this is that sexiness is inherently the act of being unusual - so there is no path to follow to get there. Developers thinking that they can be the next Will Wright if they can just make an even better person-simulation game just don't get that that isn't sexy any more because Will Wright already did that. And nobody really thinks tribute acts are sexy. Worthiness leads to a lot of point-proving ("our AI is twice as complex as theirs") to try and attract attention but it's all just so much mush.
So, the 3 Cs:
1. Creativity: Do you have an original idea that isn't just X meets Y? That's a good start. Also very hard of course.
2. Credibility: Do you have fans that you talk to directly, be honest with, love and respect? If you don't, get some. Don't PR them to death either with brain-dead business-led press release style posting. Build communities through credibility.
3. Courage: Can you commit? Can you project an identity that not only do you know what you're doing, you know what everyone else is doing wrong? Can you pick a public fight in the industry because you have passion that someone or some company is making a mess and you can take a stand?
What sexiness is really about is vision and confidence. It is about finding the niche in which you can make a difference. Many developers pooh-pooh niches, regarding them as cast-offs from the mainstream and a sort of bolt-hole in which loser companies hide. They are completely wrong of course. Niches are what feed the mainstream and become the mainstream and create change. To be "niche" is to be at the forefront.
As long as you're not making the mistake of serving a "worthy" niche. So for example, there are communities out there who's interest is essentially in relics, and there are some developers who have trapped themselves into essentially serving the forces of retro gaming. Retro gaming is a bit like folk music. It had its day, everyone respects it, it has some die-hard fans. Folk music is a niche obsessed by worthiness. It will never be sexy again. A musician cannot go and be sexy by being a better Bob Dylan. Even Dylan realized this and got out of the folk business in time.
Set the pace, don't chase the pack.
A lot of developers' heroes are guys like Richard Garriott and Shigeru Miyamoto. They want what those guys had. What those developers don't realize is that the reason Garriott and Miyamoto (and Molyneux, Wright, etc) were successful because at the time that they were coming up in the world, they were doing the brand new thing. They were sexy.
Screw Miyamoto. Screw Garriott too. Screw all of them in fact. Seriously.
You can't ever get to be as sexy and successful as they were by doing what they did because they already did it. Follow in their footsteps and you become at best a tribute act. You have to go to the edges, not the middle. If you want to get to be rich enough in games to fly to space like Garriott then the only thing that gives you a chance to do it is not to do what Garriott did because he already did it.
The worst sin that any developer can commit, therefore, is to be worthy. Worthy is boring. Nobody cares about average, boring, safe and worthy any more.
Be SEXY

| Kazza Mcb is the value of photography falling.. and are amateurs helping to ruin the industry... http://bit.ly/1C4jFP
Rick 'Glaz' Cummings the value of everything is falling Karen. It's tragic. Thu at 12:11pm
John Worrall Nearly everyone has a computer and a digital camera now adays.... ushering in an era of DIY where people take their own photos, design their own business cards etc. I have lost count of how many Microsoft Word files I have had to fix from clients with poor layout, out of focus, low resolution pictures and contain the fonts comic sans or even more comic sans :-) It is tragic. Fri at 3:00am
John Mcmurtrie ...but no talent! Fri at 4:13am
Stuart Nicholls All professionals begin as amateurs. Maybe, and this is just a thought, photography has always been overpriced, and people got used to it and paid it. Now it is lowering to it's more practical price. Also, the value of photography has to compete with the value of everything else. As the price of everything lowers, unfortunately, so does photography, after all, you can only charge what people are willing/can afford to pay. Fri at 5:47am
-------------------- I looked the article over and have been considering it. Also looking into what I would call the glut of artists. We are in a period that has been talked about in terms of the rise of the creative class.
Technology has always had an impact. Before the development of photography you had painters and engravers. Photography had a great impact upon them. There was an anxiety that painting was in decline. The 1900's saw painters pushing the limit's of their art into new forms and shifting from the solon forms to the realism presented by the photographers.
I would even say that the music industry has been experiencing a similar transformation also as equipment has developed and become easier to access. There has been a glut of rock bands emerging. Sure there is plenty of argument over the quality. ... Read More
There certainly is a glut of images being produced and of course free market economists will argue that the competition is good for the consumer by driving prices down and quality up. Competition is the considered to be the driving force in economic decision making. ...
Just thinking out loud but there will always be the few who float to stellar levels, it is not always a fair thing either. Many talented people have gone over looked. I mean there are many who have risen because of connections. Certainly the wealthy can afford to backroll a talented son or daughter. I don't want to debate that that's been going on for ever.
But this trend with stock photos and amateur photographers has been happening for the past 20+ years and the rapid advances in digital technology seem to be accelerating it. Also as you noted, social networking or Net 2.0 and it's attachment to the gift economy.
Does it ruin things? I am just throwing these thoughts out there for you. I am considering the where too from here? Not just in photography. Obviously no one's going to blow the whistle and force everyone out of the pool. The nature of our culture at the moment is just going to encourage movement in this direction. There will be some equilibrium point it's not like photography will lose all value, just like painting didn't lose all value. There were plenty of people in the 60's pronouncing art as dead....
There is also a clash of cultures and economic models prevalent too. Take the Web 2.0 and Gift Economy model, like Flickr. It clashes with the Free market economic model. Look at it this way. The gift economy model has a similarity to socialism. The free market model is capitalism. The free market model says increase competition, drive prices down and quality up. The gift economy model says reduce competition and encourage, communication, sharing and trading as a way to drive prices down and quality up. The argument against it is that prices go down but quality doesn't go up, and it sets up a favor for a favor, works fine in small communities but not in large scale societies -- there is no way to keep track of millions of favors without losing efficiency. (think of it this way if you are Rock Star, do you really want millions of paparazzi around all the time?) Therefore using money, fair pricing, and eliminating the personal component from exchanges is seen by capitalism as far more efficient.... there is an equilibrium, actually there are more than one... Just putting that out there for you to consider.
Thanks for the link and it's certainly something to give thought too. One unfortunate thing has also been the decline of print media in the digital age. You fine owners cutting corners everywhere.... Like I said just thinking about it. | comments: Leave a comment |

Calling all angels
a man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries and high above the church bells start to ring and as the heaviness the body oh the heaviness settles in somewhere you can hear a mother sing
then it's one foot then the other as you step out onto the road how much weight? how much weight? then it's how long? and how far? and how many times before it's too late?
calling all angels calling all angels walk me through this one don't leave me alone calling all angels calling all angels we're Tryin' and we're hopein' and we're not sure how...
and every day you gaze upon the sunset with such love and intensity why it's...it's almost as if if you could only crack the code then you'd finally understand what this all means
but if you could...do you think you would trade it in all the pain and suffering? ah, but then you'd miss the beauty of the light upon this earth and the sweetness of the meaning
calling all angels calling all angels walk me through this one don't leave me alone callin' all angels callin' all angels we're tryin' we're hopin' we're hurtin' we're lovin' we're cryin' we're callin' 'cause we're not sure how this goes

| Please give - Death toll from Typhoon "Ondoy" reaching 300 over 3 million displaced in the Philippines
As of the morning of October 2, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared the whole country under the state of calamity
Please give, originally uploaded by D rhymes with Busy.
My prayers are with my friends and the Philippines. Any help you could give would be much appreciated. The situation is in a state of emergency.
( DONATE TO PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RED CROSS FOR ONDOY FLOOD VICTIMS - Info for PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RED CROSS )
Death toll from "Ondoy" reaches to 240 in Philippines MANILA, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government on Tuesday morning confirmed a total of 240 people were dead and nearly 40 people were still missing following devastating floods and landslides in Luzon caused by tropical storm "Ondoy" (international code name: "Ketsana").
UN calls on int'l community to aid Philippine typhoon victims Over 3 million people are still struggling to recover from floods brought on by Typhoon Ketsana that hit Metro Manila and surrounding provinces in recent days, while at least 17 people were killed when typhoon Parma pummelled the north-eastern Philippines since Oct. 3 http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-10/05/content_12184183.htm
Typhoon "Ondoy" destroys nearly 200,000 tons of rice in Philippines An estimated 180,212 metric tons of palay, valued at 3.1 billion pesos (about 65 million U.S. dollars), were lost owing to floods and heavy rains that submerged 124,238 hectares of rice-growing areas, the Philippine agriculture department said. Affected rice growing areas include the provinces of Laguna, Batangas Cavite, Rizal and Quezon in Southern Luzon; Cagayan Valley, Aurora and Bataan in northern Luzon; Aurora, Bataan; and Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales in central Luzon. The department also said that "Ondoy" destroyed 1,279 tons of corn and 1,571 tons of fruits and vegetables. It also estimated that as of Tuesday, the value of all crops damaged reached 3.2 billion pesos (about 67.4 million U.S. dollars). http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-09/29/content_12126366.htm
So far all my friends in the Philippines appear to be ok, although some may not be in the best of conditions and certainly there has been loss. In May 2008 Typhoon Cosme (Intl. Name Halong) wiped out my good friend Jabu (Janet's Family farm. It also destroyed the Mango plantations and bamboo forests in her region and near regions with account for near half the Philippine's production. It also flooded fish production areas causing deaths, displacement, and economic harm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Halong_%282008%29
It was followed in June 2008 by Typhoon Frank (Intl. Name Fengshen). Which caused extensive flooding in Iloilo and the Bicol region. I have acquaintances who also live in these places. Some areas are still not completely back to normal. Frank also made a direct hit on Jabu (Janet) This was right after Cosme. Frank was responsible for over 1300 deaths and 250,000 people were displaced. 30,000 people spent days on their roofs waiting for help. The ship the Princess Star, a ferry of sorts, capsized on it way out of Manila. About 800 passengers died, mostly by disappearing into the sea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Fengshen_%282008%29#Philippines_3
The 2008 Pacific Typhoon Season http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Pacific_typhoon_season#Severe_Tropical_Storm_Halong_.28Cosme.29 )
--- Ondoy (International Name Katsana) has created extensive flooding in a highly urbanized area. It is densely populated. The rain fall is extraordinary. You need to remember all the other hazards of such a situation. Looting, price gouging, rescue efforts, panic... And lets not forget sewage, and medical needs, transportation problems, to or from... the area's of food production have also been drastically affected. This economic damage, food medical and control problems comes on the heals of last years damages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Ketsana_%282009%29
--- Ondoy was quickly Followed by Pepeng (International Name Parma) This is swelled to super typhoon size and gratefully track to the northern end of Luzon Island. However, Pepeng has an extensive reach and extraordinary rainfall and winds. It is threatening many in the north. To complicate matters a third system has developed and altered the course Pepeng. It is not clear yet but it could double back and even run south towards Manila for a second pass. At the moment I believe it is stalled. Even if it did not track back as far south as Manila, the area could be affected by the rainfall. Not far south of it's location is where Jabu (Janet) lives. She was hit with three fairly destructive typhoons in a year and this could be a fourth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Parma_%282009%29
2009 Pacific Typhoon Season - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Pacific_typhoon_season
Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) Track Formed early on September 23 2009. Flood water levels reached a record 20 feet high in rural areas. By September 28, 2009, at least 240 deaths were officially reported in the Philippines so far. Damage $697 million (2009 USD) and counting

Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) Formed:September 27, 2009 Dissipated: Still active Highest winds: 195 km/h (120 mph) (10-minute sustained) 240 km/h (150 mph) (1-minute sustained) Fatalities: >17 direct, >0 indirect, >0 missing
"The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) advised all local government officials in all of Luzon to evacuate all the people if needed to secure their safety from the wrath of Super Typhoon Parma (Pepeng)."
As the preparation continues, different dams were already opened and tons of water were freed to avoid the overflowing of dams. In Isabela, the Magat Dam released tons of water. Its water will pass through Cagayan River which in preparation, people living nearby the river were evacuated. The Angat Dam in Bulacan was also freed from tons of water, making the barrio of Calumpit and Hagonoy flooded. The local officials took charge to evacuate people living in the area. Five barangays in Nueva Ecija were already flooded due to Pantabangan Dam, which released 250 cubic meters per second from 1pm of October 1, 05:00 (UTC) to 1am of October 2, 17:00 (UTC). Local officials also took charge to evacuate people. In Laguna, the Caliraya Dam also released tons of water to be ready for Parma's heavy rains even though Laguna will not be directly affected by the super typhoon. At the morning of October 2, President Gloria Macapagal - Arroyo declared the whole country under the state of calamity.
"In Metro Manila, billboards were already rolled down due to strong winds that will be brought by Parma. In addition, the flights in the country were suspended as typhoon Parma will hit the country especially the Luzon area. Cargo ships and other water transportation already suspended their operation. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) suspended classes for regions 1, 2, 3, 4a, 4b, 5 and CAR.[15] In Laguna, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) evacuated a massive 100,000 residents that living beneath the Laguna lake." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Parma_%282009%29 | comments: Leave a comment |

---- Following the devastation and Flooding incurred by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) the Philippines is in need of help of all kinds. Blood, food, shelter and more. Many people were displaced and the Death tool is over 300. A second Typhoon, Pepeng (Parma) Came shortly afterwords. It has displaced many but thankfully track far north. It is causing heavy winds and rain in the Northern Luzon area and is threatening to make a return pass. I will put more info up later today.
Right now I am too tired. I have been working all night and I need to great a nap, at least. I've been going for 22 hours. It's Nap time. | comments: Leave a comment |

Come and listen you fellars, so young and so fine, And seek not your fortune in the dark, dreary mind. It will form as a habit and seep in your soul, 'Till the stream of your blood is as black as coal.
It's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew, Where danger is double and pleasures are few, Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mind.
It's a-many a man I have seen in my day, Who lived just to labor his whole life away. Like a fiend with his dope and a drunkard his wine, A man will have lust for the lure of the mind.
I hope when I'm gone and the ages shall roll, My body will blacken and burn like coal. Then I'll look from the door of my heavenly home, And pity the mind a-diggin' through my bones.
The midnight, the morning, or the middle of day, Is the same to the mind that labors away. Where the demons of death often come by surprise, One slip on the slate and you're buried alive.
It's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew, Where danger is double and pleasures are few, Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines It's dark as a dungeon way down in my mind.
--- Ha! This my rewrite of the Merl Travis song "Dark as a Dungeon" that was made popular by Tennessee Ernie Ford. "The song achieved much of its fame when it was performed by Johnny Cash in his Folsom Prison concert." [1]

The above photo is of me in 2005. I had a crappy camera and this was taken in the bathroom with the lights very low and I was very tired. It came out evil looking. Some people liked it, I thought it was creepy, if not down right evil looking. It makes me look older than I really looked.

It's been one hell of a month and I have been very worried about my friends in the Philippines. They had a very destructive Typhoon this month. It caused much damage and death in Manila. It's almost exactly 3 years to the day I was there during Typhoon Milenyo caused much damage also. The past year has had a few Typhoons there that have taken a huge toll on life, property, and the economy. Two of which crossed directly over my good friend, Jabu. Her families farm was hit hard. More later about my month and the typhoon. I'm not feeling too happy, emotionally drained. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| Janet (Jabu) AND Bianca! I hope you and your families are ok!

This is going to go over Jabu again. This is sad! I hope all my friend there are ok!

I got this track photo here: thenhbushmantyphoon.blogspot.com/
I can't access PAGASA's site. (Please don't visit this link till the storm is over, it is vital to the survival of the Philippines and is overloaded now - Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) It is overloaded. I don't want to overload it more.
The eye looks like it's going to go over Jabu in Pangasinan. I hope everything will be ok. These storms really make a mess out of the farms there. This is going to hit Jabu again. This is the 4th Typhoon over her in two years. The Farms were devastated. Whole, Mango and Bamboo forests wiped out. (They account for 1/3 to half the production in the Philippines) The location is also THE MAIN SOURCE of Bangus (Bangus is an unofficial national symbol of the Philippines) and as a source it was very destroyed.
My heart is with all my friends there. It looks like many on Luzon will be affected. Take care and keep safe my friends! I am very worried about Janet and Bianca!

The Philippine National Proverb (Salawikain)
English Translation: "He who does not (know how to) look back at his past (where he came from) will not reach his destination."
This is the first time I knew that there was a Philippine National Proverb. However it is not the first time I have encountered the concept. I have run into it in different forms in the Philippines but not as a proverb. Just in general conversation and dealings in the Philippines. The idea was very prevalent. It's actually a concept respected everywhere. However, in the Philippines the idea was often referred too in different ways. There was a deep respect for one's roots and knowing them.
Knowing this makes a dramatic shift in how I view many past transactions and the Philippines itself... There's a lot to be said.
Knowing your roots is a significant concept, (and not just the root words that is also part of many languages including the languages of the Philippines,) but to know our own history and the cultural history in which it occurs informs us about out identity. In some ways, our identity is THE destination.
The Novel "Roots: The Saga of an American Family" by Alex Haley, relies heavily on this concept. Another Salawikain that has me curious and somehow I think it's related here: "Madali ang maging tao, mahirap magpakatao" "It is one thing to be a person, to have a personality is another." [1] "It is easy to be human. It is hard to be humane." [2] "It is easy to be born a man, but it is difficult to act like one." [3]
When I translate the salawikain, with my limited knowlege of Tagalog and using a dictionary, I read this: "It is not difficult to become a person, it is difficult [to be] a man (or person). "
The translations such as: "It is one thing to be a person, to have a personality is another." Appears to have a subjective interpretation of what being a person or man means beyond merely existing. | comments: Leave a comment |
